Asking if Something is Spicy

You want to make sure a dish or salsa won't be too hot for you.

You
Disculpe, ¿esa salsa pica? ¿Es muy picante?
dees-KOOL-peh, EH-sah SAHL-sah PEE-kah? ehs mwee pee-KAHN-teh?
Excuse me, is that salsa spicy? Is it very hot?
¿Pica? and ¿Es picante? both ask about spiciness. Pica is more casual and common in everyday speech.

La roja pica bastante. La verde es más suave.
lah RROH-hah SEE PEE-kah bahs-TAHN-teh. lah BEHR-deh ehs mahs SWAH-beh.
The red one is quite spicy. The green one is milder.
This isn't always true — some green salsas can be very hot. Always ask to be safe!
You
Entonces la verde, por favor. No muy picante para mí.
ehn-TOHN-sehs lah BEHR-deh, pohr fah-BOHR. noh mwee pee-KAHN-teh PAH-rah mee.
Then the green one, please. Not too spicy for me.

¿O la quiere sin chile? También tengo una de tomate sin chile.
oh lah KYEH-reh seen CHEE-leh? tahm-BYEHN TEHN-goh OO-nah deh toh-MAH-teh seen CHEE-leh.
Or do you want it without chili? I also have a tomato one without chili.
Sin chile means 'without chili pepper.' Useful if you have very low spice tolerance.
