Going Up or Down in an Elevator

You step into an elevator and ask which floor to go to.

You
¿El elevador sube o baja?
el eh-leh-vah-DOHR SOO-beh oh BAH-hah?
Is the elevator going up or down?
In some countries you'll hear 'el ascensor' instead of 'el elevador.' Both mean the same thing.
Local
Sube. ¿A qué piso va?
SOO-beh. ah keh PEE-soh vah?
Going up. What floor are you going to?
You
Al piso tres, por favor. ¿Es arriba?
al PEE-soh trehs, pohr fah-VOHR. ehs ah-RREE-bah?
To the third floor, please. Is that up?
In many Latin American buildings, 'planta baja' (ground floor) is floor 0, so 'piso tres' is actually four levels up.
Local
Sí, arriba. Yo voy abajo, al piso uno.
SEE, ah-RREE-bah. yoh voy ah-BAH-hoh, al PEE-soh OO-noh.
Yes, up. I'm going down, to the first floor.
